The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Shijo

To find the colors of spring,
A little extravagant mother-daughter trip to enjoy from Kyoto Shijo

The air on our skin is gradually getting warmer these days. Is spring just around the corner? Before we know it, the season that makes us want to go to Kyoto has arrived. How about a mother-daughter trip to spring Kyoto, where flowers and greenery begin to change color, and even the vermilion color of the shrines and the air in the air are vividly beautiful? We tried out some luxury at The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Shijo and its surrounding area.

CHAPTER01

Surprisingly hidden spot! “Kyoto Shijo”Start your trip at the starting point

It's been a long time since I traveled with my mother. The starting point for this trip was Shijo Station, which is about a 10-minute walk from Shijo Kawaramachi, Kyoto's premier downtown area. It seems to be a convenient little-known spot. Business buildings stand side by side, and if you enter a small alley, you will find a stylish restaurant standing quietly, giving you an adult atmosphere. Still, it's the perfect location, as it's about 2 stations and 4 minutes from Kyoto Station, and has good access to various tourist areas if you use the subway or bus.

Active travel is good, but since it's a trip between women, I want to relax and experience beautiful things. Our first destination was the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. Located in Okazaki, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, this area is about 20 minutes from Shijo by subway and on foot. It is a cultural area where various facilities such as the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, ROHM Theater, and Heian Jingu Shrine are gathered. After visiting Heian Jingu Shrine, where the vermilion torii gate stands out, head to the museum.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, which opened in 1963, is a museum with a long history. The modern exterior was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, and the art inside the building includes a wide range of genres, including Japanese paintings, contemporary art, photography, and crafts.

A large work of art on the lobby floor. During the cherry blossom season, the rows of cherry blossom trees along the Lake Biwa Canal in front of you are in full bloom.

On this day, I visited the ongoing textile exhibition "Louille - Finnish Textiles: The Tuomas Sopanen Collection". "I just wanted to see it," said my mother, who loves textiles. You will be fascinated by the vivid textiles that add even more beautiful “color” to the colorful spring. The space and time where you can face the art works as you wish is a perfect spot for a mother-daughter trip.

The Ruille exhibition is being held in the collection gallery. You can enjoy it together with the collection exhibition (photo is the collection exhibition)

"Coming to Kyoto and experiencing art is kind of a luxury," said my mother, who seemed satisfied with the leisurely time that was different from usual. After enjoying the art to your heart's content, don't forget to purchase souvenirs at the museum shop on the 1st floor.

"Luille - Finnish Textiles: The Tuomas Sopanen Collection"

Exhibition period: Saturday, January 28, 2023 to Sunday, April 16, 2023

It's hard to get rid of the standard tourist spots, but you might find something new to explore in a leisurely Kyoto-esque streetscape. After leaving the hotel and strolling around the town, I arrived at Ueba Esou, the oldest paint shop in Japan, which appeared in the streets of Torocho, Kyoto, about five minutes on foot.
This is the flagship store of Ueba Esou, a paint manufacturer and wholesaler for Japanese paintings that has been in business for over 270 years since the Edo period. With a workshop and office in the back, and a shop in the front, the beautiful traditional colors are created in the historical and Kyoto atmosphere of the building. In fact, Ueba Esou also seems to have a popular manicure called “Gofun Nail,” which uses gofun made from scallop shells.
“Mizumadder”, “Momohana”, and “Shien” are all beautiful Japanese names based on colors unique to Japan. While picking up the nails lined up in the store, the conversation between the two is lively, asking, "Which color would you like?" Feel the beauty of Japan and take home the colors of Kyoto as a souvenir of your trip.

CHAPTER02

Enjoy the trip without going outside, taste the taste of a famous restaurant at the hotel

The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Shijo, where I will be staying, is conveniently located just a four-minute ride on the Karasuma Line of the Kyoto Municipal Subway from JR Kyoto Station and a one-minute walk from Shijo Station.

Bright and open lobby. The art on the wall is based on the motif of bamboo boats, and is beautifully delicately woven with Kyoto-esque scenery.

Once you step into the hotel away from the hustle and bustle of the main street, you will be enveloped in a calm atmosphere and feel as if you are being welcomed. The space is based on a design that fuses modernity and Kyoto-ness, and is perfect for women traveling together. I am relieved to see the hospitality of the hotel staff with a smile saying "Welcome". It would be a good idea to ask about recommended spots in the surrounding area and a little deep Kyoto.
On the first floor, there is a café and brasserie "Le Bon Vivre" produced by Kyoto's long-established bakery "Shinshindo". It is a popular place where you can enjoy their bread, food made with Kyoto ingredients, wine, cheese, etc.
  • Onion gratin soup, a popular breakfast item. Soup with plenty of Gruelle cheese warms the body and soul
  • The interior is like being lost in a bistro in Paris.

"I wanted to go here once!" Since the plan includes breakfast, you can enjoy a luxurious breakfast menu tomorrow morning. Choose your favorite main dish from 5 types, including freshly made egg dishes and soups with plenty of vegetables. There is also a nice service that all menus are always free to refill 8 types of bread. Just imagining a slightly luxurious and elegant morning filled with the scent of freshly baked bread fills your heart.

In fact, Le Bon Vivre recommends more than just breakfast. Afternoon Tea with the theme of seasonal fruits is also popular, and it seems that many people come to the store for the "Amaou Strawberry Afternoon Tea 2023" during the season from December to April.

Just by being brought in front of you, you can't help but shout "Wow!". Everything is homemade made in the kitchen inside the store (picture is for 2 people)

In addition to the sweets menu such as Amaou strawberries, mille-feuille, scones, and canelés using Amaou strawberries, there is also a full meal menu such as croque monsieur, soup, and mini burgers. It is a dream-like menu where you can enjoy the taste of fruit and the unique food of Shinshindo in one set.
Take a break with a cup of Ronnefeldt Black Tea which can only be tasted at first-class hotels. "It's a great deal to be able to experience Kyoto's famous restaurants without leaving the hotel," they said with a secret smile.

  • "Amaou Strawberry Afternoon Tea 2023" 3,500 yen per person (consumption tax included) is available for a limited time until late April 2023 (reservation required / ends as soon as "Amaou Strawberry" runs out)

CHAPTER03

Experience atThe Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Shijo.
The dream Suite

In addition to the wonderful atmosphere of the lobby, the guest room floors of the hotel also have a taste of the four seasons that combines modernity and tradition. The guest rooms are spacious and spacious, and all of them have bathrooms with washing areas, which is recommended for mother-daughter trips. Spending time with my mother after a long time. Would you like a little extravagance? ... and this time I chose Suite room with a little extra effort. Suite room is on the 9th floor, the top floor of the hotel, on the premium floor. There are only 14 guest rooms, and the beautiful design that interweaves the gorgeous colors and scenery of Kyoto that catches your eye the moment you step out of the hotel. The high quality is understandable given that it was designed by Hirsch Bednar Associates, one of the world's leading hospitality design companies.
Everyone dreams of staying at a hotel at least once, but many hesitate to stay in a Suite room because it is out of reach. However, when I checked the price when I made the reservation, I was surprised. During the off-season, you can stay at a relatively reasonable price. It was much more affordable than I had imagined, and it was an affordable luxury stay, which is why I decided on The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Shijo.

You can feel the beauty of Kyoto everywhere in the room with large windows. A brightly colored and playful space in a calm atmosphere

The two-room Suite are over 46 square meters in size. The rooms are impressive, with the colors of Kyoto blended together like fine workmanship. A bed with a total width of 2,400 mm is placed in the center of the room, and in addition to the main room, the bathroom area is fully equipped with a dressing table. As a privilege limited to the premium floor, all plans include breakfast, a ticket that can be exchanged at Shinshindo on the 1st floor, and a drip pod.
  • Kyoto tea served in Kyoto pottery. A casual little treat turns the ordinary into extraordinary.
  • Soft bathrobes are also available.
The two of us have said many times since a while ago, "You made the right choice" for the high-quality preparation and extraordinary hospitality. Tomorrow's checkout is 12:00 because it's a premium floor privilege and late checkout. Today is the first time in a while that we can talk slowly. From "How are you these days?" to deep conversations, let's spend time without worrying about mothers and daughters without water. Traveling here and there is nice, but spending time together like this might be the best kind of filial piety.
A trip to find beautiful colors while feeling Kyoto in spring. Mother and daughter, why not enjoy the time spent alone in Kyoto?
